Simple. Brutal. Uncomplicated. This is a workout you don’t have to think about. You just get on, drive yourself into the ground, and get off. Hopefully you’re still able to stand. Clocking in at about 45 minutes, it’s also the perfect video for anyone who needs to fit a killer, high-intensity workout into their lunch hour to tune-up for racing or weekend ass-kicking. And, unlike those other cycling workout videos which make you watch people on spin bikes, The Sufferfest again brings you world-class professional racing. Revolver is non-denominational, though, featuring officially licensed UCI track racing (Track World Cup in Manchester), cyclocross (World Cup in Hoogerheide and Koksijde) and road racing (Road World Championships in Mendrisio, Switzerland).
Workout Details
Revolver is about suffering. Suffering that comes around again and again, with barely a chance to catch your breath. It’s perfect for anyone who’s trying to build speed, power and recovery, and doesn’t have a lot of time to make that happen. Here’s what you get over the 45 minutes:
- 4:00 minutes warm-up featuring video footage from a ride along the Portala Valley in California
- 1:30 minutes of tempo riding
- 2:00 minutes of higher-speed tempo, with video from the Madison event at the UCI Track World Cup in Manchester
- Then the main event – 15x 1 minute intervals, with 1 minute rest in-between each interval, for a total of 30 minutes of intervals.
- The ‘on’ intervals are not for the faint of heart. They should be done at 9/10 or 10/10 on the RPE (recommended perceived exertion scale). They feature footage from the UCI Track World Cup (Madison, Keirin, Kilometer), the UCI Cyclocross World Cup and the UCI World Road Championships (both U23 and elite Women).
- The ‘off’ intervals features some beautiful footage descending the Col du Soler, from Cyclefilm.com. They never seem to last long enough and even though they are all 60 seconds long, the last ones seem to shrink….
- 4 minute warm-down featuring the final Ks of the Col du Soler descent.
As always, clear instructions will tell you what to do in when, so you can turn your brain off and inflict maximum suffering on yourself.
Soundtrack
To us, the music is as important as the video and the workout. Where Downward Spiral and Fight Club had specific themes, we mixed it up a bit with Revolver loading up with both alt-rock and electronic tracks. Personally selected by yours truly, it features some great new artists that you’re surely going to want to know more about…here they are (in order of appearance):
- The Same Way – Brave Citizens
- Elevator – Slapdash
- Stand and Deliver – Shake Some Action!
- Getaway Car – Genderfix
- Pobrecito – The Hellenbecks
- Shut Down – The Watermarks
- This Time – The Assistants
- Ocean Grey (Decoder Mix) – Voyager One
- Romeo Returns – Hiss & Chambers
- I Can’t Stop – Winksound
- Something to Say – jsin
- Amant – Matias Puumala
- Whisky – Bill West & The Truth
Two options: Individual or Class & Group
- Individual: Going to watch Revolver alone at home or the gym? Then the Individual version is for you. (Note – this is NOT licensed for class or group use.)(File is approx 1.2gb (!) and in .mp4 format)
- Class & Group: Plan on using Revolver in your next spinning class or group cycling session? Then purchase this version, which is licensed for group use. By purchasing the Class & Group version you’ll get (File is extremely large at approx 2 GB, so please ensure you have a good connection):
- The Individual version (which you can also use in class or group sessions)
- The Group & Class version which:
- is licensed for group/class use and which allows you to design your own workout using the Sufferfest footage. It has:
- has fewer instructions (so you can design the workout as you like)
- has NO music (so you can play your own tunes), but does have the sound effects so you know when to start/stop sections
- has no recommended effort levels and no taunts (you can taunt the class yourself!)
- PDF document with workout/race details isn’t available yet, but will be soon. If you buy the Group version now, I’ll email you the PDF as soon as it’s done.
Resolution
Rendered at 808×5400, Revolver is at a higher resolution than the other videos. It will look great on medium screens like laptops or small televisions and small screens like iPhones (you’ll have to convert it in iTunes to a medium format, though) and iPods. The file size is large: 1.3mb. Be ready with a good connection and a little patience during the download..it’ll take some time. But it’s worth it.
